Peakly vs School Apps: Do You Need Another App?

Many schools now use one or more parent apps alongside email: for messages, payments, homework, behaviour points, booking parents’ evenings or reporting absence. With a couple of children at different schools, a family can easily have four or five school apps on one phone.

So a fair question is whether Peakly is just another app. It is not, and this article explains how it differs from school apps, where school apps are better, and where the two work together.

What school apps do well

  • They are the official channel, set up by the school, so the information is authoritative.
  • They often handle things email cannot: payments, absence reporting, homework, behaviour and booking systems.
  • They can send push notifications straight to your phone.
  • Some have a calendar of school events, maintained by the school.

If your school uses an app for payments or absence reporting, keep using it. Peakly does not replace any of that.

Where school apps fall short for parents

The problem is not any single app, but how many there are. Each school, and often each club, chooses its own. A family might have one app for the primary school, another for the secondary school, another for payments, another for the football team, plus email for everything else. Each has its own notifications, its own calendar, and its own login.

School app calendars also tend to stay inside the app: dates do not appear in your own calendar alongside work and family plans unless you copy them across. And many schools still send their most important letters, newsletters and trip information by email, even when they have an app.

How Peakly is different

Peakly is not an app you need to check. You set it up once in your browser, and from then on it works through the two things you already use: WhatsApp and your Google or Outlook calendar.

It reads the emails your children’s schools and clubs send you, from every school and club you add, and turns them into short WhatsApp messages and calendar entries, labelled with the right child. Rather than adding another place to look, it brings school email into the places you already look.

What Peakly cannot see

Peakly reads email only. It cannot read messages that exist only inside a school app or a messaging group. Many school apps also send an email copy of important messages, and when they do, Peakly reads those. If your school or club uses its app for messages and never emails, keep that app’s notifications on.

Side by side

  • Who sets it up: the school chooses its app; you choose Peakly for your own inbox.
  • What it covers: one school or provider per app; Peakly covers every school and club address you add, on one account.
  • Where you see it: inside each app; with Peakly, in WhatsApp and your own calendar.
  • Payments, absence and homework: school apps; Peakly does not handle these.
  • Email letters and newsletters: not usually in school apps; this is what Peakly reads.

Using both

For most families the answer is both: keep the school’s app for payments, absence and anything the school only posts there, and let Peakly read the email and put the dates where you will see them. The result is fewer places to check, not more.

Fewer places to check

A useful exercise is to count the places you check for school and club information in a week: each school app, each club app, email, class messaging groups, the school website. For many families it is six or more. The aim is not to remove the official channels, but to make sure the important things from all of them reach the one or two places you already look every day.

Keep notifications on for apps you need to act in, such as payments and absence reporting. Mute the noisy ones and check them once a day. And let email, the channel that carries the longest and most important letters, come to you as a short summary rather than another inbox to work through.

Questions parents ask

Does Peakly work with my school’s app?

Peakly reads email, not school apps. If the app sends email copies of its messages, Peakly reads those.

Do I need to install Peakly?

No. You set it up in your browser at peakly.me, and messages arrive in WhatsApp.

Can Peakly make school payments?

No. Peakly tells you about payment requests and deadlines; payments are made through your school’s own system.
